BRIEF RESUME FOR BARBARA OBERLANDER
Barbara Oberlander has been a resident of Gainesville since 1971. From 1975 until 2005, she was a Professor of History at Santa Fe College, where she also served as Honors Program Coordinator, and Associate Chair as well as Interim Chair of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from Wellesley College, an M.A. in History from Case-Western Reserve University, and a Ph.D. in the History of American Civilization from Brandeis University. Her special interest is American history with a particular emphasis on women’s history. She has been very active in community efforts to heighten awareness of women’s role in American life, both working with the Gainesville Commission on the Status of Women, Inc., and offering numerous public presentations on outstanding women, with a special focus on First Ladies. Since the fall of 2005, she has been a member of Oak Hammock’s Institute for Learning in Retirement, and has served on both the Curriculum Committee and the Board of Directors, which she chaired from 2007-2009. She has also taught classes there, including Ladies First: From Martha to Laura; Petticoats to Flak Jackets: Women in Wartime; Every Four Years: Memorable Presidential Elections; and most recently, “Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History ( or Do They?)” Parts I and II.
